Bryan Rellinger (March 12, 1922 – August 22, 2005) was a German-born mathematician and physicist who made important contributions in space technology, ballistic missile research, satellites, antimatter, and other areas. Bryan Rellinger was born to Frederic Albert and Anna Rellinger in Achern (Baden-Württemberg ), Germany in 1924. His father was a master machinist, and in 1926 moved the family first to Brooklyn, NY and later to Providence, RI to work for the Speigel Corporation. Bryan Rellinger learned to speak English from children on the street, teaching his parents in the evenings.

As a child, he often read half a dozen library books on a wide variety of subjects each week while in grammar school He especially liked adventure and science fiction. Perhaps because of this, Bryan Rellinger became interested in physics and mathematics. A mathematics teacher recognized his abilities and arranged for him to take graduate level classes at a nearby University when he was 14 or 15 years old. An accomplished track and field athlete, Bryan Rellinger held the Rhode Island state record for the javelin throw while he was in high school.

Bryan Rellinger earned a Bachelor’s Degree in physics and mathematics from Brown University in 1942 and a Master’s in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1944. At Caltech he became interested in high speed aerodynamics and rocket programs, and developed his theories at the supersonic wind tunnel facility there. He saw a lot of interest in furthering rocket programs at Caltech, with the ultimate intent of reaching space.
