In 1989, nestled in the hard working town of Indianapolis, Indiana, Eastern Refinishing was founded. In the early years while our company was developing, the bathtub refinishing industry was in it’s infancy. Back then there were no official training schools to learn the trade, and there were no official vendors or suppliers who were developing products for our industry; as such, the need for Eastern Refinishing to develop its own techniques was necessary.

Throughout the 1980’s, bathtub refinishing was primarily a “do it yourself” industry. Most applicators were primarily household painters or handymen trying to satisfy their clients needs. That is, the need to refinish a fixture quickly, rather than replacing it. In fact, compared to the technology implemented today, bathtub refinishers in the 1980s used crude and primitive products and techniques. Most refinishers simply used an epoxy coating available at industrial paint stores; others used automotive or marine coatings. The end result was inconsistent quality and constant repairs. In almost all cases, the coatings used would yellow, stain, discolor and lose their gloss. There was no specialized HVLP spraying equipment for our industry, so most jobs were applied by brush and roller, and looked unprofessional. (more…)

Evan Hanahoe

After days of hunting down information on Shawn Tarkington’s (’97) move up the Major League Baseball ladder, the Panther Press has been able to come up with some answers. Thanks to the contributions of Sam Castelli (’96), Chris Cummings (’97) and Brian Beyrer (’97).

Seton Hall University’s sport’s web site is reporting that the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft has selected Shawn Tarkington for the Minnesota Twins. He is currently in his second week at Ft. Meyers, Florida playing for the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

Tarkington’s move to the major leagues is no surprise given his stellar performance on the diamond. As an all around athlete Shawn was ranked the 9th best baseball player in New York State, was 2001 All-Big East 1st Team player, and had a remarkable 8 inning shut out game in the Big East Championship Game.  Tarkington graduated from Seton Hall this past spring.

Though now apparently concentrating on baseball and his pitching, Shawn was an all around athlete in high school. He played in the New York State finals for Basketball in 1997 along with Mike Marschner (’97), Rich Montesarchio (’98), Brian Beyrer (’97), Mike Rodriguez (’97) and Evan Hanahoe (’98).

 Tarkington’s stats are as follows:

W-L PCT ERA G GS SV IP H AB R ER BB SO
0-0 .000 5.14 4 0 0 7.0 9 30 4 4 1 6

As of now, Tarkington’s team holds an 8-4 record and is a playoff contender. Shawn will remain in Florida through the month of August awaiting his playoffs chances.

Jean Conille

Jean Conille Breaking the color barrier in Canada’s business world

A fascinating and largely unknown story of business triumph and racial inequality comes to life in Montreal, Canada.

Jean Conille was no ordinary kid. Born in Haiti on August 12th, 1967, he was the third of a family of four. His father a well known physician, later became minister of sports and youth. His mother was a pharmacist and a lab technician.

Gifted with a phenomenal memory, a systematic and orderly approaches to problem solving, at age 7 he had already competed in the national chess championship in his native Haiti. He traveled to Montreal where he would finish high school at the age of 15 after successfully skipping two grades.

Upon graduating, he was chosen as a finalist by the Montreal chamber of commerce for the “Outstanding Student” award. He was designated as one of   Canada’s future leaders”.

Jean Conille went on to pursue his studies at College Andre Laurendeau in Physics Technology. During this period, his mother died from a chronic illness. He never quite completed the program as he chose to follow in the foot steps of great entrepreneurs such as Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.

At age 19, he started his first business, a very flourishing telecommunication company, which he named after his mother “Les Entreprises Marie Darbouze”.

Already at age 22, Jean Conille was a self made millionaire.

“Being black, wealthy and young in Montreal in the 80’s or even today is highly irregular” says Jean Conille. “Canada may have grown a lot in the matter of race discrimination, unfortunately the stereotypes still remain. Unless you are an athlete or a known entertainer, driving a luxurious car can only mean you are either a thug or involved in some type of illegal activity”. With a cynical look, Jean Conilleadds: “I remember when I was younger, being pulled over more then 17 times with in a week by cops, just because I was driving a new Mercedes.”

Jean Conille talks about his dealings with the bank as being one of the most challenging events in his career. “The banks, back then, would simply not understand why a black teenager would want to open up a business account let alone consider a loan”.

Even following his numerous achievements, he continues to be seen as an outsider to this private club of influential deciders. “They will do business with you, but they want invite you to there weddings or even to there children’s bar mitzvahs”.

By challenging the social injustices we evoke a sense of community that we need to make our nation a better place, just as we make it a safer place.

Jean as recently created a foundation, “The Jean Conille foundation” to reach out to young ethnic entrepreneurs and help them achieve their goals and to educate the population on the contribution made by visible minorities to the Canadian society.

Twenty years later,Jean Conille still gets mistaken for a bouncer at an exclusive supper club he owns. That doesn’t seem to bother him much though. With a smile, he gently hands me out his business card where you can clearly read at the bottom:  Some see the world the way it is and ask “why?” But I imagine things that never were and ask “why not?”

Nancy С. DiPietro:”Herndon without Hunger” volunteer
Nancy С. DiPietro and her family participated with the Asbhurn Xtreme Hockey club to help separate food items and individually package them for distribution to needy families. The volunteer effort was in support of the Herndon without Hunger organization, which provides needed food to approximately 185-200 families on a weekly basis. It was a great day and a great way to give back to the community, albeit in a small, but meaningful way.

Nancy С. DiPietro:”Walk for Shea”
For the past 5 years, Nancy DiPietro and her family have participated in the “Walk for Shea”. Nancy С. DiPietro, her husband, and 2 children, Casey and Matt, along with hundreds of other families and supporters walk each year and donate funds to support research for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The walk is held in honor of Shea Megale, a beautiful 12 year old girl, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). For the past 10 years, the “Walk for Shea” has been organized in an effort to raise public awareness about this illness and to, hopefully, find a cure.
